GREENWOOD - More than twenty-one years after the first air traffic control tower was built at the Greenwood-Leflore Airport, city, county, and federal officials joined with members of the Greenwood-Leflore-Carroll community to break ground on a new and permanent structure that will be something in which aviation businesses and enthusiasts can take pride.

The new tower was designed by AJT Engineering of Cocoa, Fla. and will be built by Flintco of Memphis, Tenn., the same contractor that recently finished construction of the air traffic control tower at Memphis International Airport. The $2.3 million airport project was paid for with congressionally-directed funds and will be just over 86 feet tall and 25 feet square at its base.

Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams said that the new air traffic control tower will be a wonderful addition to the Greenwood-Leflore Airport. "The new tower will enhance our community's economic development strategy and will add yet another incentive to the industry recruitment toolbox, especially for aviation-related businesses," McAdams said.

With the project scheduled for completion in the summer of 2011, interested citizens can view the progress online by visiting the "Construction Cam" here. For more information on the Greenwood-Leflore Airport, please visit http://www.gwoairport.com.
